Support for Young People Affected by Someone Else’s Drug or Alcohol Use

The Family Team at CDAS

At CDAS, we support young people affected by someone else’s drug or alcohol use. If someone in your life—like a parent, sibling, friend or carer—is using substances and it’s impacting how you feel, we’re here to help. You deserve a safe space to talk, be heard, and get support that’s just for you.

We support children and young people aged 5 to 19.

Our aim is to offer a safe, non-judgemental space where young people can talk, feel listened to, and explore what’s on their mind.

How we help

  • One-to-one support

  • Group sessions and workshops

  • Workbooks and creative activities

  • Visits at home, school or in the community

  • Informal, supportive conversations

  • A confidential and friendly service tailored to individual needs

Where We Can Meet

We can meet wherever the young person feels most comfortable, including:

  • At home

  • At school

  • In the community – for example, while out for a walk in a public space

Who Might Be Affecting Them?

The support we provide at CDAS is for young people affected by someone else’s drug or alcohol use – this could be:

  • A parent or carer

  • A sibling

  • A grandparent, aunt or uncle

  • A close friend

It might be something that is happening now or something that happened in the past.

Talking to us is safe

We take confidentiality seriously. What a young person shares with us stays private unless:

  • We are really worried about their safety

  • We are really worried about someone else’s safety

If we do need to share something, we will always try to speak to the young person first.

getting started

A member of our team will explain what to expect during the first conversation, which can take place over the phone or in person. This is an opportunity to:

  • Share any feelings or worries

  • Talk about things that are on their mind

  • Find out how we can help

Referral and consent

  • We work with children and young people aged 5 to 19

  • If the child is aged between 5 and 13, we will need consent from a parent or guardian
